Historical Significance

This temple houses Goddess Ganga, who represents the beginning of the river Ganges. According to tradition and Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to atone for the misdeeds committed by the ancestors of King Bhagiratha after many decades of arduous and rigorous penance. The force of the falling river threatened to destroy the planet. Lord Shiva captured the river in his locks and released it as Ganga at Gangotri, a small stream that bears his name. Gangotri Temple was built as a memorial of this sacred event. The principal temple of pilgrimage is situated amidst tall, lush greenery and is set against the backdrop of high mountains, offering one of the most beautiful views to its guests.

The temple has undergone several modifications and enhancements since it was first built by the Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. It presently consists of a stunning white building with exquisite construction that blends traditional and modern design elements.

Temple Opening and Closing

The temple welcomes pilgrims on Akshaya Tritiya, a day which the Hindu calendar considers to be extremely auspicious, and it is open until Diwali, the festival of lights. Priests carry out daily rites like aarti, bhajans, and yagnas throughout this period, fostering a profoundly spiritual atmosphere. The "Goddess Ganga's Idol," which exists inside the temple, is another revered shrine situated at the Gangotri Temple.
