About Yamunotri Dham and its Significance

At an altitude of about 3,291 meters, Yamunotri Dham, the revered goddess Yamuna is said to be the daughter of Surya and twin sister of Yama (god of death); In the Vedas, Yamuna has been referred to as Yami (lady of life). It is said that dipping in the holy waters of Yamuna washes away all sins and protects from untimely or painful death. Such strong associations place Yamuna Devi at a high position of divinity in Hindu mythology.

Yamunotri stands proudly with its high mountain peaks, glaciers and the fast flowing water of Yamuna. India's second most sacred river, Yamuna River, originates from Yamunotri, making it one of the pilgrimage sites of Chhota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.

Yamunotri Temple was first built by the King of Tehri Garhwal Sh. Sudarshan Shah in 1839. Secondly, after damage caused by earthquake, it was rebuilt by Maharani Guleria Devi of Jaipur in the 19th century.

The holy pilgrimage site Yamunotri in Uttarakhand opens for pilgrims every year on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, in 2023 Yamunotri Dham was opened on 22 April 2023. Yamunotri temple closed its gates for pilgrims on the day of Bhai Dooj (14 November 2023)


How to Reach Yamunotri

Location of Yamunotri, There is no direct motorable road till Yamunotri. Tourists and pilgrims have to trek approx. 6 km from Janaki Chatti, the last place accessible to vehicles. The nearest railway station is Dehradun which is 171 km away from Janaki Chatti, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, which is 197 km away.
